Many clients ask me what can they do to prepare for installation of their braids or twists. I generally recommend that they condition their hair really well before braids are installed. I also let them know not to use braids, weaves or twists to get away from taking care of their hair. But to use the protective hair style while doing everything that they can to keep their hair healthy. Getting braids/twists will not solve any hair damage issues that might exist, they will only make the damaged hair worse. I also recommend that they buy a braid fiber that is light so hair is not weighed down.
