What is Retraction Alopecia, and How Do You Get It

You have spent almost an entire day with your stylist getting your individual braids/twists installed.  And by the time you get home, they still HURT!!! If this happens each and every time you get your hair braided, you are going to end up with some major hair care problems.  One being something called RETRACTION ALOPECIA!!

This is a small or localized hair loss area caused by repetitive or persistent pulling or traction on hair roots. Tight braids and ponytails can pull hard enough on hairs to make them fall out. If this happens, it's best to choose hairstyles that put less tension on hair. The sooner this is done the better to avoid permanent damage.

Here are some tips to help with too tight braids or twists:

1. Massage the loose area of your scalp.  When doing this, you are effectively pulling hair away from the scalp and loosening the braids.

2. Jump in the shower and let the warm water run all over the braids.  Begin to rub your scalp gently, but vigorously.

3. Use a small object like a pencil or something smaller to push lightly in the middle of the braid to help loosen it.  You can also use a small comb to loosen those braids up.

Healthy Hair Care is an adopted practice!
